RELICS YOU DON’T WANT TO PART WITH
My parents had a huge bowl at the end of their bench that was used as a fruit bowl, but over time it became the dumping bowl for anything and everything.
The bowl reminds me so much of my beautiful Mum and Dad, and the house we all grew up in.
I could not part with it, but, I needed to make it relevant in my life by putting it to good use.
So I decided to use it routinely as my trifle bowl.
It was the perfect size for large family gatherings.
I felt the meaning was significant, because I have memories as a child of certain bowls that always came out on special occasions and were customarily used for the specific purpose of the food they contained.
I used the bowl for the first time for its new demeanor and made the most amazing trifle.
It was probably my best ever.
As we sat around eating our dessert it was noted it was the bowl that had sat at the end of the bench in my parents’ home and was used as a fruit bowl.
Everyone was elated at the use of the bowl, and the bowl was accepted as the new family heirloom.
Then a child reminisced how my parents used it to also put their keys and loose change in.
We all screwed up our faces but none the less the food was delicious and the bowl has fond memories.
Then another child recalled the mail and odd screws that no one knew what they belonged to, along with anything else small gathered around the house also ended up in the bowl.
Again we all screwed up our noses, however, I assured them all it had been washed thoroughly.
And finally the third child evoked an image by telling us she distinctly remembered Papas hearing aids in that bowl and possibly his teeth!!
By this time not only had we all screwed up our noses but our mouths all looked like we were eating sour grapes.
It was hilariously funny, and now we are all undecided whether we want to make this our everlasting family heirloom.
However, I probably will use it, because I can’t think of anything I would want more than a bowl with all those treasured memories!!
